There are many great regions of Thailand for a golf holiday and Chiang Mai is one of the best.  Located in the north Thailand, it may not be the first place on the list of holidaymakers but for golfers, some of the finest courses can be found here.

Alpine Golf Resort is not only regarded as one of the top golf courses in Chiang Mai but the whole of the country.  It opened for play in 2008, so is a modern development and was created by Ron Garl of Golf East.  The course has played host to some big tournaments and has won several awards over the years.

The 27-hole golf course is a delight to play.  The surroundings are special with mountains providing a lovely backdrop in addition to the trees, valleys and rice fields.  One of the rice fields has even become part of the golf course and is an element of a par-3 hole.  It is the only hole currently in Thailand to have a rice filed island green and is something visitors never forget.

The 27 holes are grouped together in three sets of nine officially labelled Course A, Course B and Course C by the golf club.  The latest set of nine holes have been divided into three distinct categories called the Pine Tree Zone, Wetland Zone and Paddy Zone.

Course A begins with a gentle par-4 and the bunker on the right side of the fairway should not come into play.  However, as the round develops, the fairways begin to narrow and many opt to leave the driver in the bag for something more accurate.  The 7th hole, which is a par-5, is arguably the most challenging and you will need to carry the same stream at least twice before landing on the green.

Course B is where water really comes into play and from the 2nd hole onwards there is the possibility of water causing an issue.  You will find the longest par-5 on the course on this set of nine holes which has trees on the right and out of bounds on the left to add to the challenge.  There are several intimidating tee shots on this course.

Finally, to Course C at Alpine Golf Resort where you will find some of the most challenging greens.  The island green awaits on the final hole and the tee shot is key, with an approach down the right side of the fairway the best angle of attack.  However, this requires a long carry over water.  It’s a great way to finish a round.

The facilities at Alpine Golf Resort are excellent.  You will find a superb clubhouse complete with locker rooms, restaurant, pro-shop, swimming pool, spa and gardens.  You can even stay in the 4-star resort if you wish.

Alpine Golf Club Chiang Mai

A very enjoyable first visit to this course and Club.

The condition wasn't brilliant, the greens were sanded and "furry" and I doubt much faster than 7 or 8 on the stimp. The fairways had been heavily watered and in many places there was lying water. We played winter rules to take account of the conditions. Very helpful club house and pro shop staff.

Challenging layout, greens disappointing.

Staff friendly and welcoming however getting organized to hit the range was disorganized. The greens showed lots of areas being resodded and many greens top dressed yet no advanced notification and no break on green fees. Nice course but green condition disappointing for the dollar spent.

Drive up to Facility was lovely, it ended there.

Very nice updated facilities, drove up to drop off clubs no one out front, I had to flag down a security guard to take my clubs, I had the misfortune to play after they had sanded the greens. very inconsistent greens. They look like they have some damage. and didnt come back. I am a 4 handicap, and the course layout is excellent -- left, right, water, and so on. I played the B and C courses and enjoyed the layout. Conditions: wet poor tee boxes. Fairways: 3.5 greens 3 clubhouse 4.5 practice area 4 just because they had one. Over all 3.8 Best part of round was caddie she was on top of game clubbed me after watching my shots on the range. Caddie #194 NEW, request her , also english is very good. I'm replaying today because i prebooked two rounds. It sounds like the Highlands is the best course in the area. Probably won't return.

Different day same result, course needs some work

2nd day of playing Alpine B and C , as it has it the best Nine that im told is Course A it has been closed for a week, good for future Golfers and the course, bad for me. They only moved about 1/2 of the pins so basically played the same course 2 days in a row. As expected shot better the second day 78 and 74 today. I asked for same caddie, she is wonderful excellent english #194 Mew.. I will rate a little higher greens still sandy but I played better..LOL.. Last note I was a single and starter realized that and move me up to the first position right after cross over so the back nine took 1 hour walking... it was a delight 3 hour round on a sunday!!! when does that happen. Hit em straight

Great course and facilities, the only downside is green maintenance

Reviewed by ; on
Played both Highland and Alpine. Personally like Alpine better because this is really a beautiful course surrounded in mountains much better view than Highland. Layout is great, challenging course. It is bit more booked than Highland, but they have several courses and caddie know how to get around to speed up your play. Clubhouse is also better. If anything not very good I think is the green. The terrain itself has made it difficult, and some of holes just sanded not enough grass and speed vary greatly so be careful with your distance control
