You do not have to travel far from the city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand to experience a fantastic round of golf.  Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort is a good example and this golf course is a short 20 minute trip from central Chiang Mai.

As with many of the golf clubs in Chiang Mai, you can choose whether you would like to stay in the city or at the golf resort.  Mae Jo Golf and Resort is no different and you will find accommodation is available with 51 rooms in the modern Lanna-styled complex.

The golf course itself has been designed around a large central lake and this is where you will find the main resort building.  The first tee is just along from the clubhouse and provides a gentle introduction to the course with a mostly straight par-4 with a circular green protected by one bunker.

The second hole of this 18-hole set-up is a par-3 and this is where water comes into play for the first time.  The fairways throughout the course are quite narrow and those who are accurate off the tee as opposed to long will enjoy plenty of success.  However ,there are four tee boxes to choose from on each hole so every player will feel comfortable during a round at Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort.

Water comes back into play again on the par-4 5th hole and you must decide if you are going to take on the water with an approach direct to the green or lay-up on the left side of the fairway.  This is one example of many strategic options at Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort.  The doglegs and water mean you can play over the hazard or take the safer, but longer route to the green.

Mae Jo Golf Club and Resort has built a good reputation for itself since opening in 2004 and continues to host major tournaments in Chiang Mai.  A good example is the Singha Chiang Mai Open, which the golf course hosted in 2019 and featured a group of professional players on the All Thailand Tour Golf.

Having completed a round, the contemporary clubhouse is a lovely place to relax.  You will find a nice range of dishes available in the restaurant and you can enjoy a meal and drink while watching the golfers teeing off below.  In addition, you will find a locker room, pro-shop and driving range facilities.

Not a recommendation

Reviewed by ; on
I still like the setting of the course and all the nice gardens, but this course can not be recommended. Even though I asked via phone, greens still suffer from the last maintenance, club house is under construction, my caddy had only been working 4 weeks and could not find the balls or drive the car. The course would be easy to walk, but for non members the cart was an obligation. Too expensive for the quality you get. Pace of play was good as the locals don't go, golfsaver should have warned us.

Average course and facilities

Reviewed by ; on
The course was average compared to others in Chiang Mai. The greens were very average along with clubhouse and facilities. Men’s change room had 4 showers with about 20 players waiting to use them.

Not at its finest when it has been raining

Reviewed by ; on
A tricky course, protected by plenty of water and trees. Difficult to score well due to the number of holes which contain trees in the centre of the fairway, this making the second shot often difficult. Played the day after a heavy downpour, and it clearly does not drain well. No run on the ball or the greens. Even though a good price, it is quite far out of Chang Mai centre and not currently very well presented from tee to green. Disappointing.
